Small Grants Funding Opportunity for Alumni 2022

The Public Diplomacy Section (PDS) of the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade announces competition open to individuals and organizations to submit nominations for the Small Grants Program for Alumni. Please check here for information on other SAP funding opportunities.

To note: PDS Belgrade strongly urges potential applicants to consider submitting proposals with activities focused on participants or audiences from towns and villages in Serbia other than Belgrade.

Program objectives:

Alumni Small Grants Program funds are specifically intended for use by alumni of United States Government-sponsored exchange programs (USG). (See the list of U.S. government sponsored exchange programs below.) The Alumni Small Grants Program allows our alumni to use their experience in the United States to develop ideas and implement projects on how to give back to their home community or to Serbian society. more generally. These projects allow alumni to showcase their leadership and organizational skills, creativity and innovative approaches to problem solving, as well as their ability to network and work with allies to achieve their goals.

Grant activities can take many forms, including trainings, conferences, workshops, courses, academic competitions, summer camps (focused on language study, sports, etc.), exchanges cross-border, program development, exhibits, hackathons or application development, online projects, mock trials or moot court competitions, simulations and role-play activities (e.g. congress model, United Nations model ), film or theater festivals, performances or other activities.

Alumni small grant proposals should be developed with a SMART logic model. The objective of your activity should be: Sspecific, Mmeasurable, Afeasible, Rrelevant to the problem or challenge, and Ttime based which means you will meet them on a certain date.

In accordance with the Executive Order on Promoting Racial Equity and Under-Served Communities, proposals must demonstrate how the program advances equity in terms of race, ethnicity, religion, income, geography, d gender identity, sexual orientation and disability. The proposal should also demonstrate how the program will promote engagement in underserved communities and with individuals from underserved communities. Proposals should demonstrate how addressing racial equity and underserved communities will improve the goals and objectives of the program, as well as the experience of participants.

In light of social distancing measures and to limit the spread of COVID-19, we welcome proposals that use video conferencing, distance learning tools, etc. If your proposal includes in-person activities, please consider including contingency plans, if the health situation requires social distancing measures to be in place during the grant period.

Beneficiaries are expected to: publicize your activities, including through social media and / or traditional media; and underscore the support of the US Embassy, ​​with our logo included on project related documents.

Program themes:

The Embassy is seeking applications focusing on the themes below. We have included ideas on what your project could do, but we welcome creative approaches and activities.

  1. ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS / PROTECTING THE WORLD AROUND US. Promote awareness of environmental issues and our responsibilities as global citizens, including through education, experiential learning and community projects.
  2. PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. Expanding opportunities for people with disabilities (PWD) in Serbian society (e.g. in education, business and workplace, government, civil society, media, sports, the arts, etc.) , defend their equal rights, share stories about the success of people with disabilities in Serbian society, breaking down stereotypes and / or designing solutions to help people with disabilities overcome the challenges of greater participation in society.
  3. GENDER-BASED PROGRAMS. Promote gender equality, female entrepreneurship and the empowerment of women, as well as the fight against gender-based violence.
  4. TOLERANCE AND HUMAN RIGHTS. Promote tolerance and equality for other vulnerable populations – including ethnic and religious minorities, members of the LGBT community, refugees and migrants, victims of human trafficking, etc. – and / or fight against violent extremism and radicalism in Serbia and the region.
  5. RULE OF LAW / FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION. Promote the rule of law, legal reform and transparency in government, and fight corruption, in the workplace, in education, in the delivery of health care, in the legal system, in government offices, etc.
  6. CIVIC PARTICIPATION / YOUTH LEADERSHIP. Promote the participation of Serbian citizens in public debate on political issues, engagement with officials and government bodies, finding solutions to local problems, etc.
  7. STABILITY, PEACE AND CROSS-BORDER COOPERATION. Support conflict resolution efforts in Serbia and the region, seek reconciliation, promote mutual understanding and promote cross-border cooperation and communication to resolve common problems.
  8. STRENGTHENING INSTITUTIONAL CAPACITIES. Capacity building efforts have focused on strengthening civil society organizations, media and educational institutions.
  9. FIGHT AGAINST BRAIN LEAKAGE. Promote entrepreneurship and innovation, develop Serbia’s market economy, expand local employment opportunities and provide creative ways to keep young employed and prosperous in Serbia.
  10. MEDIA TRAINING AND CRITICAL THINKING. Promote media literacy and critical thinking, especially among students and young professionals. This could include learning through simulations and role plays, competitions and academic projects, etc.
